Five weeks after it first roared into FX’s prime-time lineup, the outlaw biker drama Sons of Anarchy has locked up a second season commitment.

The strip has been picked up for a follow-up run of 13 episodes, said FX president and general manager John Landgraf. While the writers’ strike effectively forced FX to premiere Sons of Anarchy in the busy fall TV season, it’s likely that the net will look to shift the series to a summer schedule in 2009.

Through the first five episodes, Sons is averaging 5.4 million total viewers and 3.5 million adults 18-49, based on a weekly five-telecast cume.

“It’s incredibly gratifying to everyone at FX in at this time when The Shield––the show that got our critically acclaimed original programming brand started––is airing its final season, a loyal audience has embraced Sons of Anarchy and made it a success,” said Landgraf.  “We’re also very proud of the day-in-day-out creative excellence the Sons of Anarchy writers and actors are bringing to the table.”

Sons stars Charlie Hunnam (Undeclared), Katey Sagal (Married...with Children) and Ron Perlman (Beauty and the Beast). The series was created by Kurt Sutter, who also serves as executive producer.

Since it isn’t every day I have the chance to interview a megastar (and impress my two teenage children in the process), this week’s column is devoted to the one—and only—Gene Simmons, with whom I spoke on camera during our Mediaweek All-Stars luncheon last week.
